History
Schmiedag GmbH as it stands today was originally established as a forge by Peter Dallhaus in Hagen-Eckesey in 1824. In 1873 the company was transformed into Grüntaler Eisenwerke AG which in turn became Schmiedag AG in 1928, a mechanical engineering company with an integrated forge and several production plants in Hagen. That same year Schmiedag AG acquired Schwinn AG, a die forge headquartered in Homburg/Saar which had been founded in 1905. In 1931 Hoesch AG acquired both companies, merging with Eisenwerk Rothe Erde to become Hoesch-Rothe-Erde Schmiedag AG in 1968.
In 1991 the plants in Hagen and Homburg were acquired by Ascometal S.A., a member of the USINOR Corporation in Paris, and resulting in formation of the ASCOFORGE Group. Since 1999 Schmiedag GmbH has been a member of Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH.
