History

Schmiedag GmbH & Co. KG as it stands today was originally established as a forge by Peter Dallhaus in Hagen-Eckesey in 1824. In 1873, the forge evolved to become Grüntaler Eisenwerke AG which in turn became Schmiedag AG in 1928—an engineering company with an integrated forge and several plants in Hagen. That same year, Schmiedag AG acquired Schwinn AG, a stamp shop established in Homburg/Saar in 1905. In 1931, Hoesch AG acquired both companies, merging with Eisenwerk Rothe Erde to become Hoesch-Rothe-Erde Schmiedag AG in 1968.

In 1991, the plants in Hagen and Homburg were acquired by Ascometal S.A., a member of the USINOR Corporation in Paris, and resulting in formation of the ASCOFORGE Group. Schmiedag GmbH & Co. KG has been a member of Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH since 1999.
